FOAM (Fotografie Museum Amsterdam) Tentoonstelling - An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar- 18 januari t/m 6 april 2008 In maart 2007 riep een internationale jury de Amerikaanse fotograaf Taryn Simon (1975) uit tot een van de twee winnaars van de KLM Paul Huf Award 2007. Onderdeel van deze jaarlijkse prijs voor jonge internationale talenten is een tentoonstelling in Foam. An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar is de laatste van deze twee tentoonstellingen. Voor An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar inventariseert Taryn Simon wat binnen de Verenigde Staten verborgen en verscholen ligt. Zij vindt haar onderwerpen binnen de wetenschap, de overheid, de geneeskunde, de entertainment, de natuur, de beveiliging en religie, en legt deze vervolgens op uiterst nauwgezette wijze vast. Simon neemt voor dit project een dubbelrol aan van zowel scherpzinnige informant als verzamelaar van curiositeiten, en onderwerpt zij een hele cultuur aan haar onderzoek.
Fotografietentoonstelling Hectiek Zonder Haast - Zomeractiviteiten in het Scheringa Museum voor Realisme Voor wie verlangt naar vroegere tijden, toen hectiek niet aan de orde van de dag was, organiseert het Scheringa Museum voor Realisme in Spanbroek de fotografietentoonstelling Holland Zonder Haast. Te zien zijn ruim 80 zwart-wit foto’s van zeven belangrijke Nederlandse fotografen die het karakteristieke Holland van de jaren vijftig prachtig in beeld hebben gebracht. Tijdens deze zomer tentoonstelling worden er verschillende activiteiten georganiseerd voor jong en oud. De tentoonstelling loopt van zondag 25 mei tot en met zondag 28 september 2008. We hopen u te mogen begroeten in het museum! Arrangement ‘Holland Zonder Haast anno 2008’ Op 5 juni organiseert het museum het arrangement ‘Holland zonder Haast anno 2008’ waarin een rondleiding, lunch en workshop gecombineerd worden. U wordt ontvangen met koffie en Westfriese krentenmik en krijgt van een fotograaf uitleg over enkele basisprincipes van de fotografie, zoals compositie, perspectief en lichtinval. Vervolgens wordt u rondgeleid door de tentoonstelling. Wellicht bekijkt u de foto’s nu met een ander oog! Na de lunch start de fotografieworkshop; onder begeleiding van de fotograaf gaat u in de omgeving van het museum fotograferen. Na afloop worden de gemaakte foto’s met de groep bekeken en van de mooiste krijgt u een afdruk mee naar huis. De workshop is niet bedoeld als technische cursus, maar om te ervaren op welke manieren door een cameralens gekeken kan worden. Het arrangement vindt doorgang bij 20 aanmeldingen. Bij voldoende animo wordt het arrangement nog een keer ingepland.

Early Photography. This national 'on line' catalogue contains art-historical information on the earliest photographs owned by the Rijksmuseum (Rijksprentenkabinet) in Amsterdam, the Print Room of the University of Leiden and 25 other museums, archives and libraries in the Netherlands. The catalogue encompasses more than 3,700 portraits, city views and landscapes from the pioneering period 1839 -1860. These photographs were taken in the Netherlands, France, England, Germany and the United States by both Dutch and foreign photographers. Famous images by photographers such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Edouard Baldus and Gustave Le Gray are found along with the earliest photographs of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Haarlem. World Press Photo of the Year 2007 - British photographer Tim Hetherington wins premier award The international jury of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest selected a color image of the UK photographer Tim Hetherington as World Press Photo of the Year 2007. The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at "Restrepo" bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents. The 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US infantry is undergoing a deployment in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan. The valley is infamous as the site of downing of a US helicopter and has seen some of the most intense fighting in the country. Hetherington's photograph is part of a picture story that was also awarded 2nd Prize in General News Stories. He had traveled to Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair.
